Got a Dry, Tickly Cough? It Could Be "Lung Dryness."
What is "Lung Dryness"?
In Chinese Medicine, your Lungs are considered a "delicate organ" that is the first point of contact with the outside world through the air you breathe. They require a certain level of moisture to function comfortably and effectively.
Just as Cold or Heat can be external influences that affect the body, so too can Dryness. This pattern occurs when an external "Pathogenic Factor" of Dryness invades your body and directly injures the fluids of your Lungs.
Think of it like leaving a plant in a very dry, hot room or a windy spot for too long. Its leaves begin to curl and wilt. This is what is happening to your respiratory system. It's an acute condition caused by your environment.
The most common causes are:
- Dry Autumn Weather: Autumn is the season associated with Dryness.
- Artificial Environments: Overly heated or air-conditioned rooms with very low humidity.
The hallmark of this pattern is Dryness affecting the upper part of your body. You might experience:
- A Dry, Hacking Cough: This is the primary symptom. It's often tickly and unproductive.
- Dryness of the Passages: A dry nose, dry mouth, and a dry or sore throat.
- Thirst: You feel thirsty and want to drink.
- Dry Skin: Your skin may feel unusually dry or chapped.
- Stool: In some cases, the dryness can affect the intestines, leading to dry stools or constipation.
Important Note: This is different from a chronic Yin Deficiency. Think of it as your body being temporarily "parched" by the environment, rather than being deeply depleted of its own internal fluids.
Your acupressure treatment was designed to moisten the Lungs, generate fluids, and expel this external Dryness from your body.
Lifestyle Advice: How to Rehydrate Your System
The entire strategy is focused on adding moisture back into your body and your environment.
1. Your Diet Must Be A Soothing Balm:
- AVOID Drying Foods: This is crucial. You must stop adding things that will worsen the dryness. Strictly limit or avoid:
- Pungent, hot spices: Chilli, curry, raw garlic, raw onion.
- Coffee, alcohol, and cigarettes.
- Very salty foods.
- EAT Moistening Foods:
- Pears: This is the number one food for moistening the Lungs. Eat them fresh, steamed, or in a juice.
- Honey: In moderation, it is excellent for soothing a dry throat and cough.
- Nuts & Seeds: Almonds, pine nuts, and sesame seeds are all good choices.
- Other helpful foods: Spinach, tofu, milk or soy milk, and pork.
- Sip Fluids: Drink plenty of warm water or herbal tea (like peppermint or licorice root) throughout the day to stay hydrated.
2. Humidify Your Environment:
Since the cause is environmental, changing your environment is key.
- Use a Humidifier: This is highly effective, especially in your bedroom while you sleep.
- Simple Tricks: Place a bowl of water near your radiator or heater to add moisture to the air.
- Steam: Inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water (be careful!) or taking a steamy shower can provide immediate relief to dry nasal passages and a dry throat.
3. Rest & Gentle Movement:
- Avoid Heavy Sweating: Intense exercise that causes you to sweat a lot will deplete your fluids further.
- Opt for Gentle Movement: Walking, gentle yoga, and stretching are best.
4. Acupressure at Home:
This combination is wonderful for generating fluids and soothing the Lungs.
- Lung 7 (Lieque - "Broken Sequence"): A key point to release external pathogens from the Lungs and to soothe a sore throat and cough.
- Location: With your palms facing each other, interlock your thumb and index finger. The point is in the small depression on your forearm directly under the tip of your top index finger.
- How to: Apply firm pressure for 1-2 minutes.
- Kidney 6 (Zhaohai - "Shining Sea"): A master point for moistening the entire body, especially the throat.
- Location: In the depression directly below the tip of your inner ankle bone.
- How to: Apply steady pressure for 1-2 minutes. This is a brilliant point for any kind of dry, sore throat.
By actively adding moisture back into your diet and environment, you can quickly soothe your Lungs and resolve the discomfort of this pattern.
