Severe Swelling & Cold? It Could Be "Water Overflowing."
What is "Kidney Yang Deficiency with Water Overflowing"?
This pattern is a severe progression of Kidney Yang Deficiency. As we've discussed, Kidney Yang is your body's fundamental "pilot light" or core fire. One of its most important jobs is to provide the heat needed to "steam" and transform the water you drink, moving it correctly throughout the body.
Think of your body's fluid system as a series of rivers and dams controlled by a furnace (your Kidney Yang). When the furnace is burning strongly, the system works perfectly.
When Kidney Yang is deficient, the furnace is weak. When it becomes so weak that it goes out completely, it can no longer power the dams or move the rivers. The water metabolism comes to a halt. The water is no longer transformed or moved; it simply sits there, cold and inert, and begins to overflow its banks.
This "overflowing water" can move in two directions:
- Downwards, causing severe swelling in the lower body.
- Upwards, "insulting" the Heart or Lungs, which can be very serious.
The hallmark of this pattern is edema (swelling) combined with a profound feeling of cold. You will likely experience the symptoms of Kidney Yang Deficiency (sore back, coldness, fatigue, low libido) PLUS the signs of overflowing water:
- The Key Sign: Severe Edema (Swelling). This is often pitting edema (when you press on it, an indentation remains for a few seconds). It's typically worse in the ankles and legs but can be all over the body.
- Scanty Urination: The body cannot excrete the water, so there is very little urine.
- Coldness: A profound feeling of cold, especially in the back and limbs.
- If Water Overflows to the Lungs: Breathlessness (especially when lying down), and a cough with thin, watery, or frothy phlegm.
- If Water Overflows to the Heart: Palpitations and a feeling of cold and oppression in the chest.
This is a serious pattern of deficiency that requires diligent care. Your acupressure treatment was designed to strongly warm your core fire and promote the transformation and excretion of the excess water.
Lifestyle Advice: Stoke the Fire, Drain the Water
Your entire focus must be on warming your body from the inside out and supporting its ability to process water.
1. A WARMING and DRYING Diet is Crucial:
You must stop pouring more cold water into a system that is already flooded.
- Strictly AVOID All Cold & Raw Foods: NO iced drinks, cold water, smoothies, or raw foods.
- Strictly Limit Salt: Salt causes the body to retain water and must be significantly reduced.
- Eat Warming, Simple Foods:
- Warming Spices: Ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and fennel are essential for rekindling your core fire.
- Diuretic Foods: Aduki beans are particularly good for this. Onions and garlic can also help.
- Your meals should be warm, well-cooked, and easy to digest. Think of thick, hearty stews rather than watery soups.
2. Protect Yourself and Stay Warm:
- Keep Warm at All Times: Dress in layers. Keep your lower back (the "home" of the Kidneys) and your feet especially warm.
- Use a Hot Water Bottle: Placing a hot water bottle on your lower back is essential for warming your Kidney Yang. You can also place one on your abdomen.
- Gentle Movement Only: All your energy needs to go toward healing. Avoid any strenuous exercise. Gentle stretching or a very short, slow walk on a warm day is the maximum.
3. Acupressure at Home (with Moxibustion if possible):
Note: For this pattern, applying warmth (moxibustion) over these points is the traditional and most effective treatment. If you are not familiar with moxibustion, simple acupressure is still beneficial.
- Governing Vessel 4 (Ming Men - "Gate of Life"): This is the point that directly accesses your core fire.
- Location: On your lower back, on the midline, in the depression below the second lumbar vertebra.
- How to: Place your warm palms over your lower back and rub vigorously until warm.
- Conception Vessel 9 (Shuifen - "Water Separation"): A classic point for promoting the transformation of fluids and reducing edema.
- Location: On the midline of your abdomen, one of your own thumb-widths directly above your navel.
- Spleen 9 (Yinlingquan): A major point for draining excess fluid and dampness from the lower body.
- Location: On the inside of your lower leg, in the depression just below the bulge of your knee bone (the medial condyle of the tibia), behind the shin bone.
This is a deep pattern that requires patience and consistent, dedicated care. By focusing on rebuilding your core warmth, you can help your body regain control of its fluids and find lasting relief.
